Festival 2025
After a warm and memorable celebration last year, Panorámica continues the festival eleventh edition with its commitment to being a window from Stockholm – and Sweden – onto the richness and diversity of Latin American cinema and culture.
For the first time, we turn our focus to one particular country: Uruguay, whose current output, both in fiction and documentary, offers innovative, sensitive, and committed perspectives. We are pleased to announce the presence of actress Martina Passeggi, the protagonist of the opening feature film A Bright Future, directed by Lucía Garibaldi and awarded at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. Martina will share her reflections on Uruguayan cinema in conversation with director Pablo Martínez Pessi, who joins us once again to present his new documentary Into the River.
We are also honored to welcome Colombian biologist and activist Brigitte Baptiste, protagonist of the documentary Brigitte Planeta B, renowned for her work on queer ecology and biodiversity.
In addition, we will be joined by Panamanian director Annie Canavaggio, who will present her documentary Hijo de tigre y mula, a profound exploration of the traces of colonialism in Panamanian history. Her work resonates with the thematic focus of this edition: Colonialist Occupations. The choice of this theme is an invitation to explore the many ways in which occupation – territorial, symbolic, political, or economic – has shaped and continues to affect our societies, our memories, and our understanding of our region and the world.
From intimate stories to social portraits, this year Panorámica offers a program that hopes to inspire us to imagine other possible futures. In times when unimaginable horrors unfold before our eyes, we believe in the power of cinema, dialogue, and encounters as spaces to build hope.
Welcome to a new edition of Panorámica: a week of cinema, critical thinking, and community!

Seminars
Uruguayan Cinema in Motion: Memory, Tradition, and New Voices
In recent years, Uruguayan cinema has gained recognition for the strength of its storytelling, its artistic integrity, and its social engagement. Filmmakers and documentarians work in dialogue with politics, memory, and change.
What opportunities and challenges do filmmakers and other artists face in a small country with a strong cultural tradition? How is cinematic expression shaped in a context where everyday complexity often takes precedence over spectacle?
This talk features Uruguayan director Pablo Martínez Pessi (Into the River) and actress Martina Passeggi (A Bright Future). Drawing on their recent works, we reflect on production, distribution, and representation in a place that rarely takes center stage, but has much to say.
Saturday 27th of Sept, 16:00, Cinema Zita Folkets Bio. Free entrance upon capacity.
In collaboration with ABF Stockholm.
Colonial Occupations: Legacy of the Past and Present Reality
Colonialism remains present today in territories, economies, politics, and everyday norms. How does it manifest in Latin America, and what role does cinema play in understanding its impact?
In this seminar, we take as our starting point the documentary Hijo de tigre y mula by director Annie Canavaggio, who joins us for the conversation. The film portrays Panama’s complex path toward self-determination and reveals how colonial power structures continue to shape both societies and the lives of individuals.
Together with the director, we reflect on what colonial occupations mean in practice – from territorial control and military presence to economic dependence and cultural domination.
Sunday 28th of Sept, 16:00, Cinema Klarabiografen. Free entrance upon capacity.
In collaboration with ABF Stockholm.
Uruguay in focus
Uruguayan cinema expresses its own personality, narrative, and aesthetic, nourished by a tradition of deeply human and multifaceted sensitivity.
In addition to co-producing as a majority partner, Uruguay increasingly participates as a minority partner, thanks to an ecosystem that is attractive for its artistic and technical quality, as well as the availability of various funding tools.
National productions have received international recognition, including Don’t You Let Me Go (Nora Ephron Prize, Tribeca 2024) and A Bright Future (Viewpoint Award, Tribeca 2025).
~ Festival party ~
Just like every year, the traditional Panorámica Party takes place alongside the festival. A perfect opportunity to dance and celebrate this year’s Latin American film festival.
See you on Saturday, September 27 from 9:30 PM!
