The Festival 2026
Twelve years after its launch, Panorámica continues to be a window onto the richness and diversity that characterize contemporary Latin American cinema.
This year’s programme encompasses everything from intimate perspectives and collective experiences to more experimental cinematic expressions. The films invite audiences to explore unexpected questions and engage with stories that fall outside established narratives.
In this edition, the festival turns its gaze towards childhood as a space of imagination, freedom and hope; a place from which we can observe the present and imagine other possible futures. Through stories told from the perspectives of children and young people, the programme explores how new generations relate to the world, their communities and their territories.
Films such as The Condor Daughter (Bolivia), The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo (Chile) and The Devil Smokes (Mexico) offer stories about growing up, belonging and love, but also about the search for one’s own place in contexts shaped by inequality, social change and the tensions of our time. Meanwhile, Mailin (Argentina) and The Ivy (Ecuador) tell stories of a lost childhood and the struggle to reclaim the most personal territory of all: one’s own life.
This year, Mexico is the festival’s country in focus—one of the region’s strongest and most multifaceted filmmaking nations. With five Mexican feature films in the programme, as well as the presence of producer Daniela Contreras and director Nicolas Défossé (A Bigger Place), we have the opportunity to explore different realities within the country and discover more of contemporary Mexican cinema.
We are also honoured to welcome Uruguayan director Gerardo Minutti, who will take part in a conversation about humour and social criticism in his feature film Dogs. We invite you to join us in this space that, year after year, we open up as a place to meet, share experiences and discover new perspectives on cinema and our contemporary world.

Experimental Film in Latin America: Between Boundaries, Genres and New Cinematic Languages
Experimental film in Latin America has long been a space for exploring new ways of storytelling—a space where image, sound and form become tools for challenging the boundaries between documentary, fiction and art.
What opportunities and challenges do filmmakers working with experimental forms encounter in Latin America? How is experimental cinema shaped by the region’s diverse cultural traditions? And how can film create new perspectives on collective memories, social experiences and places that are often left outside dominant narratives?
Drawing on the films Barrio Triste and Matapanki, we invite you to a conversation about the role of experimental cinema in contemporary Latin America.

Participatory Filmmaking in Latin America: Stories from Other Territories
Participatory filmmaking offers a different way of seeing—not from the outside looking in, but through the voices, perspectives and experiences of those involved in the creative process.
How does the relationship between filmmakers and communities change when the camera becomes a space for encounter and collaboration? What stories emerge when people are no longer simply subjects in front of the camera, but also become part of the creative process?
In this seminar, we discuss participatory audiovisual practices and their role in creating collective memories and histories in Latin America, drawing on the documentaries A Bigger Place (Mexico) and Landmarks (Argentina).

With a long filmmaking tradition and a new generation of internationally acclaimed filmmakers, Mexico has one of the most important film industries in Latin America and on the international stage. Mexico has also become an important hub for international productions and global streaming platforms. In 2025, streaming giant Netflix announced a $1 billion investment in film and series production in Mexico over the following four years.
This year’s edition of Panorámica highlights five contemporary Mexican films.

Daniela Contreras
Daniela Contreras is a documentary film producer. She is an anthropologist with a master’s degree in Humanities, specializing in Literature. She entered the field of documentary filmmaking in 2005 and has since produced several feature-length and short documentaries that have been selected and awarded at national and international festivals. In 2016, she co-founded the Documentary Film School project in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.
Gerardo Minutti
Gerardo Minutti holds a degree in Social Communication. In 2025, his debut feature film Dogs, a co-production between Uruguay and Argentina, had its world premiere in the Official Competition at the Málaga Film Festival in Spain. Dogs has been presented at more than 20 international festivals and film showcases. Gerardo also directed and wrote the short film Hogar, which received a Special Mention from the Jury at the Biarritz Latin American Film Festival in France in 2019.
Nicolas Défossé
Nicolas Défossé is a filmmaker, editor, and producer. During the 2000s, he focused on providing audiovisual training in Indigenous communities in southeastern Mexico, while making several short films as well as the feature-length documentary ¡Viva México!. In 2009 he co-founded the production company Terra Nostra Films and in 2016 the Documentary Film School of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, whose films have received more than 90 awards over the past five years.
